Mandalas

Mandalas and Urchins

I have a lot of large items for my shows, but not enough smaller items. So, I decided to do some 4″ embroidered mandalas. I draw a design on white or black fabric and stitch it in the opposite color. I also add beads where I feel each needs it. There is a rose quartz bead in the center of each piece. This series will be called the Rose Quartz Mandala series. I finished Mandala 1 and started Mandala 2.

I was thinking of selling these individually for $40 each. I also think it would be cool to do a piece with the hoops attached to each other.

I have had these urchins for some time. I’ve known that I wanted to make a piece with them, but I wasn’t sure how I wanted to do that. The urchin above was cleaned of it’s spikes, and the one underneath was not cleaned. I want to make some statement with it, but I’m not sure what that would be right now. I’ve just put them on the fabric I would like to use and placed them near my work space to think about how I want to work with them. This incubation (thinking) period is really important. When you spend as much time making work as I do, you want to make sure you are making things that excite you.

This post was written a few weeks ago. I have finished the Urchin piece. It’s called Fragile. I have also abandoned the original idea for the mandalas to a reflection of the chakras. I’m currently working on that. This is how Fragile turned out. It is all about the garbage with put into the oceans.
