I Used to Paint

I am staying with my nieces in Buffalo before we go to Canton, Ohio this weekend for my mother’s funeral. Mom had been ill, so it wasn’t a big surprise when my sister called. But, it still hurts no matter how it happens. So, I took a plane to Buffalo immediately upon hearing of her passing, and I’ve been here all week.

I always have to have something to do no matter where I am or what is happening around me. I didn’t have my fabric with me, so I went to Michael’s and bought a pen and some watercolors. For years, I painted watercolors with pen and ink. I love this process, but with all of the things happening in our lives, I put it on the back burner.

As soon as I began painting and drawing, that great feeling returned. I love working with fabric and making wall hangings, but I also love this. So, I’m not changing my focus; I’m just expanding it to include watercolor and pen and ink. I did The Color Birds yesterday.

Here are some pictures I have made in the past.

I love color and being happy when I create something. Trying to be like someone else or stressing over a work because it is not realistic enough is how I functioned in the past. The new me is going to make things like I make them and not worry about copying others or doing it in some “correct” manner. I know that it still takes practice to be good at what you do, so I do need to practice techniques. However, I am only going to do what makes me happy, and not what I think people want.

Art should be fun, not a burden. Otherwise, why are you doing it? There are many other things you can do to make you happy.
