Fragile

Fragile 11 1/2″ X 12″ $275

This piece started with two urchins. I picked these up from the beach at Harborside. I scraped the spines off of one and left them on the other. I had them for awhile and didn’t know what to do with them. So, I just started moving them around a piece of material.

I decided to paint a piece of fabric with acrylic to make it look a little like it was under water. Then, I cut a hole in one piece of material and put it over the painted material.

The little pink bird is a threader.

I thought I would put some cut pieces of painted fabric over the hole to make it look like seaweed.

I didn’t really like that, so I took it off.

The colors that I chose to paint the material seemed like pollution in the water. I Googled water pollution, and a site about the Great Pacific Garbage Pit came up. I always knew there was an ocean pollution problem, but I didn’t realize it was that bad. So, I decided to make the piece about ocean pollution. I made a list of things that cause pollution in the ocean and stitched them around the circle.

Then I sewed shells around the inside of the circle and sewed shells at each number around a clock face. That is to represent that we don’t have a lot of time to address this issue.
