The Lion Sleeps Tonight

The Lion Sleeps Tonight 18″ X 21 1/2″ NFS

This piece is going to my grandnephew when he arrives in September. : )

A couple years ago, a worker at Four Seasons Farm grew a dye garden. She had a dye party that I attended. I used a wrapping shibori technique on white cotton, and the indigo plant for dye. Indigo is normally dark blue, but that is the traditional shibori used with vats of indigo that are cared for over many years. We used an oxygenation method to get this color. It is light, but I really like it anyway.

After I unwrapped the material, I noticed that the center dye part looked like 2 giraffes, and it looked like there were 2 elephants in the corner. The strings coming down looked like vines. So I used some of the coreopsis dyed material to make the lion to bring the Lion Sleeps Tonight to life.
